Location: Nouadhibou
The Urointec Foundation conducts its first medical mission in Mauritania and treats more than 200 patients in Nouadhibou
From March 31 to April 5, the Urointec Foundation carried out its first urology mission in Mauritania, in the city of Nouadhibou, considered the country’s economic capital and home to approximately 150,000 people. Until now, this city had no urology services, forcing many patients to live for years with undiagnosed and untreated conditions.
During the mission, the Foundation’s team of volunteers performed 45 surgical procedures and provided outpatient care to more than 200 patients, addressing an urgent healthcare need for many people who, with proper treatment, will be able to regain their quality of life.
For many patients, this initiative has provided their first real opportunity to be evaluated by a urologist.
A team of dedicated volunteers
The mission was made possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of a team of seven volunteer professionals:
- Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago
- Yasmina Pérez
- Javier Mora
- Rubén Cutanda
- Alberto Rivero
- Oliver Estupiñán
- Isabel Casaus
Over the past few days, the team has been conducting medical consultations, performing surgeries, and collaborating with local professionals in an environment with limited resources but with tremendous dedication on the part of the medical center’s staff.
Much more than just surgery
In addition to providing direct patient care, the mission also focused on strengthening the capacity of the local healthcare system, one of the cornerstones of the Urointec Foundation’s work.
The activities carried out included:
- Training of local physicians in open urological surgery techniques
- Training for nursing staff on specific procedures and care
- Knowledge sharing with local healthcare teams
- Support for hospital improvement initiatives
The goal is for each mission to be not just a one-off intervention, but another step toward developing the specialty in the city.
Partnership with the Nuadibú City Council
The mission was carried out in collaboration with the medical centers of the Nuadibu City Council and Brahim Ahmed, the Head of International Cooperation, whose support was essential in organizing care for hundreds of patients in just a few days. The mayor of the city welcomed us upon our arrival and thanked us for our work.
The public response has been very significant and reflects the enormous need for specialized urological care in this part of the country.
Continuation of the project
Following this first mission in Mauritania, the Urointec Foundation plans to return to Nouadhibou in the second half of the year, with the aim of continuing to develop urology services in the city and building on the impact achieved in the region.
The Foundation is committed to continuing its efforts to bring specialized urological care to areas where it is not yet available, always working in collaboration with local professionals and helping to strengthen healthcare systems from within.
